Celebration Tosses

Throwing rice in celebration of the couple getting married is a tradition that dates way back to ancient Rome or Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. The custom is inteded to give newlyweds good luck and often represents fertility and abundance.

Today, birdseed and flowers are more popular choices as things to be thrown at a couple. It seems that the years has taught us that rice is bad for the birds who feed on the uncooked rice. Other popular tosses in celebration include fall leaves, sunflower seeds, paper snowflakes, or blowing bubbles. Kids LOVE the bubbles, although we see adults getting a little excited about bubbles sometimes as well, I must admit.

I always love capturing this part of celebrations, however it has it's scary side as well. Birdseed will be in your hair for days, bubbles can cause a slippery floor in some cases, and I've even seen a groom get hit in the eye with rose petals, which as silly as it may sound was quite painful, and came as a sudden surprise. So, choose wisely, and make sure to base your decisions on when and where you plan this part of your celebration.
